Registries of Deeds and Companies go modern

A new state-of-the-art computer system designed to significantly improve service at the Registries of Deeds and Companies is available as of today.

The services provided by the Registries of Deeds and Companies are critical to commerce in the province. A search of the Registry of Deeds is necessary to buy a house or any property. All corporations in the province must be registered with the Registry of Companies.

Companies and Deeds On-line (CADO) is being developed for the Department of Government Services by xwave. The first phase of the project is the intranet system now available within the government network. It allows individuals to search property titles and company information from a computer terminal within the registry.

"This system is a vast improvement for the staff of the registries and searchers," Government Services Minister Dianne Whalen said. "It makes conducting searches easier and less time consuming. The old system developed more than 20 years ago has been irritating customers and staff for some time because it tends to break down. Property transactions have increased by 40 per cent in the last three years, putting increased pressure on the antiquated system."

Users of the registries were consulted on the development of the new system, and training has been provided. The next phase, the Internet component, is expected to go on-line before the end of the fiscal year. It will allow for the registration of companies on-line and will enable searchers anywhere to access the Registries of Deeds and Companies from their own computer.

"The implementation of this system is consistent with this governments commitment to provide more on-line services and make dealing with government easier," Minister Whalen said. "It will greatly enhance the registries ability to serve commerce in the province."

The new system will be self-funded through fees for the registration of companies and deeds documents and annual company registration renewals.
