NLIS 3 May 17, 2004 (Government Services) Changes to driver examination services Government Services Minister Dianne Whalen announced today changes to the delivery of driver examination services throughout the province. Motor Registration Division is reducing the number of communities to which the provinces driver examiners travel to administer road and written tests, and take photos for licence renewals. The number of sites where these services are offered will be reduced from the current 41 communities to 21. No driver examiners will be laid off as a result of this decision. Government is attempting to achieve efficiencies in the way driver examiners perform their jobs in the province. Photos for renewals and written tests can now be done at one of the driver examination offices, or by counter staff at the three Motor Registration Division offices, or the many Government Service Centres. "This measure should significantly reduce the waiting periods for road tests, as driver examiners will not be spending as much time traveling," Minister Whalen said. "In some cases, driver examiners spent four hours of the work day driving to and from these locations. They will now be able to conduct more road tests in the run of a day than is currently the case." The 21 sites where these services will continue capture 83.6 per cent of all road tests done in the province, and 86.8 per cent of all tests written by beginner drivers. These changes will save $100,000 annually. There will be no changes to driver examination services in Labrador West or Southern Labrador. Full services are available at the driver examination offices in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Flowers Cove, Stephenville, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Lewisporte, Gander, Marystown, Clarenville, Harbour Grace and Mount Pearl. Driver examiners will continue to travel to Labrador City, Forteau, Cartwright, Port Hope Simpson, Port aux Basques, St. Anthony, Deer Lake, Bonavista, Springdale and Milltown. Driver examiners will honour all existing appointments in the affected communities. Media contact: Tracy Barron, Communications, (709) 729-4860 or 690-6157
