Four Fogo Island residents receive fines totaling $8,000 for poaching

Four Fogo Island residents were convicted of poaching at Provincial Court in Springdale on January 6 and were handed fines totalling $8,000. The offences occurred on October 7, 2003, in the Springdale area and involved four members of a hunting party.

A conservation officer from the Springdale office of the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods conducted the investigation and seized eight quarters of moose and a firearm, a 308 rifle. Judge Randy Whiffen convicted the four of offences which include transporting untagged moose, killing two moose on one licence and hunting without a valid licence.

Rodney Jacobs and Cory Penton, both of Joe Batt's Arm, each received a fine of $3,000. Anthony Penton of Joe Batt's Arm and Aiden Foley of Tilting each received a fine of $1,000. All four individuals were also given a five-year hunting prohibition.
