Industry representatives agree to further mediation on crab

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, has appointed a team of three mediators to convene weekend discussions between representatives of crab harvesters and processors in the latest effort to resolve the current dispute on the price of snow crab.

The mediation will be led by Joe ONeill, the CEO of the provinces Labour Relations Agency. Mr. ONeill mediated exploratory discussions between the groups in mid-April and reported that a positive outcome was mired by the polarized views of both groups positions on raw material shares (production quotas) for 2004. Minister Taylor has since repeated that a raw material sharing system will not be implemented for the 2004 snow crab fishery.

The Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) and the Association of Seafood Producers (ASP) have agreed to participate in this process. The mediation team is expected to report to Minister Taylor early next week, or sooner.
