Minister supports FRCCs recommendation on Northern Gulf cod

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, is urging the federal government to heed the advice of the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) and to open a small-scale cod fishery in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The decision on whether to reopen the fishery rests with Geoff Regan, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Based on available scientific data, the province believes that the cod stock will rebuild and that a small-scale fishery will not inhibit this rebuilding.

"A meaningful role for the FRCC has been one of the key issues that I have raised in meetings with Minister Regan," said Minister Taylor.

"The FRCCs recommendation that a small-scale cod fishery be opened in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence is certainly welcome news to our province," said the minister. "A small-scale cod fishery in the Northern Gulf is vitally important to the enterprises and communities in that area.

"I am going to write to Minister Regan in formal support of the FRCCs recommendations and will urge the federal government to reopen the commercial cod fishery in the Northern Gulf. I will also encourage the minister to implement important conservation measures aimed at rebuilding the stock."
