Provincial government contributes $100,000 to tsunami disaster relief efforts

Premier Danny Williams said today the provincial government will contribute $100,000 to assist with tsunami disaster relief efforts in Asia.

"People all around the world, including people in this province, are shocked and saddened by what happened in Asia, and as a government it is important to do what we can to assist the victims of this tragedy," said Premier Williams. "We know there are Newfoundlanders and Labradorians directly impacted by the events of the past week, and our thoughts are with them and their families, and indeed with all those affected, during this difficult time."

Premier Williams said the $100,000 donation will be made directly to the Canadian Red Cross on behalf of all people of the province. The premier also encouraged individuals in the province to continue to contribute to relief efforts to the best of their ability.

"Internationally, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are recognized for being extremely generous, and individuals throughout the province have already donated to the relief effort. I want to encourage the people of the province to continue to make donations to assist those affected and to help with relief efforts."
