(Executive Council)

The following statement was issued by Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

I rise today to inform my honourable colleagues about a project currently being undertaken by the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada or FWIC. This organization have recently chosen to adopt communities in northern and coastal Labrador for their upcoming national project, FWIC Into the North.

Womens Institutes are an informal, educational organization for women who want to work together to expand their skills, broaden their interests and strengthen the quality of life for themselves, their families and for the people of their communities, country and the world through self-fulfilment, service and sociability.

At a recent national meeting of their executive, they committed to a project aimed at improving the lives of families in coastal Labrador by donating funding for supplies for childrens activities.

A letter is now being sent to the mayors and chiefs of the various northern communities asking for their suggestions for project ideas.

I would like to thank the Federated Womens Institutes of Canada for their interest in providing support to our northern region. I wish them well on their project and on all the good works being done by the various Womens Institute branches in this province and across the country.
