Foundation chooses local high school for student exchange program

Premier Danny Williams, in conjunction with the Maple Leaf Foundation of Boston, Massachusetts, announced today that Holy Heart High School in St. John's is the Canadian school that has been selected to participate in the Maple Leaf Foundations 2005 Student Exchange Program.

The exchange takes place between high school students from Boston and their counterparts in a Canadian city. The two-week exchange involves ten students and two staff members from each school. Josiah Quincy Upper School has been chosen to represent Boston for the April 2005 exchange with Holy Heart High School. The premier and Mr. Dave Cooper, Principal of Holy Heart, participated in a ceremony at Josiah Quincy Upper School in Boston today, along with Mr. Robert Catell, Chair and CEO of Keyspan Corporation and Chair of the Maple Leaf Ball; Mr. Kenneth Rossano, Advisor for Cassidy and Associates, Chair of the New England-Canada Business Council and Chair of the Maple Leaf Foundation; and Mr. Bak Fun Wong, Principal of Josiah Quincy Upper School.

"The Maple Leaf Foundation and the New England-Canada Business Council are to be commended for the vision, initiative and support they demonstrate towards interactive education through its annual student exchange program," said Premier Williams. "Holy Heart High School has a long and esteemed history in our province. It has continually produced top level students and graduates who have impacted our province, this country and the world for more than 50 years. It is very deserving of this honor. The students of Holy Heart High School and Josiah Quincy Upper School will benefit greatly from the values of education, cooperation and cultural tolerance which this program promotes."

"Holy Heart High School is pleased to be selected to participate in this year's Maple Leaf Foundation Student Exchange with Boston," said Principal Cooper. "Historic ties between Newfoundland and Labrador and New England have helped shape our maritime communities and we are honoured to participate in the continuation of those bonds and traditions. Holy Heart High School would like to thank the Maple Leaf Foundation and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for facilitating this wonderful opportunity."

The Maple Leaf Foundation was founded by a group of businessmen in the Boston area to promote trade and an improved understanding between the world's two largest trading partners. The annual Maple Leaf Ball was initially co-sponsored by Bobby Orr and the foundation and supports the annual student exchange. This is the 20th anniversary of the Maple Leaf Foundation's very successful program.

During his visit to Boston, Premier Williams met with 11 Newfoundland and Labrador companies participating in a trade mission organized by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development's New England Trade and Investment Initiative. He is also attending the New England-Canada Business Council's Energy and Technology Conference.
