Premier Williams to address energy conference in Boston

Premier Danny Williams will speak at the 12th annual U.S.-Canada Energy Trade and Technology Conference being held in Boston, Massachusetts, November 4- 5. Premier Williams will give the opening keynote remarks on Friday, November 5. Premier Williams will be accompanied by Natural Resources Minister Ed Byrne.

"The Energy Trade and Technology Conference gives this province a tremendous opportunity to market our non-renewable and renewable resources to our nearest trading partner," said Premier Williams. "We have opportunities here right now for those who want to get in on the ground floor of some of the most important energy developments on the east coast of North America."

Organized by the New England-Canada Business Council, the theme for this years Energy Trade and Technology Conference is North American Energy: A Changing Landscape. The focus of the conference is on the key energy market issues and challenges facing North America and the Northeast. The annual meeting brings together leading industry and government officials to discuss trends shaping Canadian and United States markets, with a focus on the Northeast.

"The message I want to send to the delegates at this conference and, indeed, to this area of the United States, is that Newfoundland and Labrador is abundant with energy-related opportunities," said the premier. "We have world-class resources, we have the infrastructure, we have the institutional supports and we have the skilled people that investors demand. And we are open for business."

While the province has established its place in the petroleum industry through its three offshore oil projects, Premier Williams will also outline at the conference the untapped potential of the natural gas resources offshore on the Grand Banks, Laurentian Sub-basin and on the Labrador shelf.

"We have the potential to become a significant producer of natural gas in North America," said the premier. "Strong gas prices, continuing exploration, emerging technologies and strong demand in the nearby American market are giving investors in Newfoundland and Labradors offshore a great deal of confidence and enthusiasm."

Yet, Premier Williams said what will also be important for the conference delegates to hear about is the provinces significant source of clean, renewable energy.

"We know the American market is hungry for another significant, secure source of renewable, low-cost energy," said Premier Williams. "Our province has one of the best undeveloped hydroelectric sites in North America on the Lower Churchill River. With the renewed interest that is being expressed about sources of energy that are friendlier to the environment, we believe the time is right to promote the development of this resource."

Premier Williams will also use this opportunity to meet with representatives of some key players in the energy sector.
