Premier Williams pleased with governments achievements in the first year of mandate

November 6, 2004 will mark the first-year anniversary of the Williams administration. After receiving a resounding mandate from the people of the province in the 2003 provincial election, the Williams government was sworn into office on November 6, 2003.

"We laid out for the province our plan for economic growth and job creation in our Blueprint for the Future, and caucus and Cabinet immediately set to implementing our agenda and our vision for a more prosperous and self-sufficient Newfoundland and Labrador," said Premier Williams. "We quickly found out that it would not be an easy undertaking, given the fiscal mess we inherited. However, we knew that government is a balancing act and that economic growth is no more important than ensuring we have strong social programs and services. I believe we have done an admirable job in delivering governance which achieves this delicate balance, and we are all very proud of that."

Premier Williams released a document which outlines an extensive sampling of initiatives and accomplishments achieved by government in the past twelve months. The premier said that despite the need to make some very difficult decisions, including a tough budget and a prolonged public service strike, government has accomplished a great deal in one year.

"I firmly believe that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians understand what needed to be done and, though there was some tough medicine to swallow, those difficult measures were done in order to ensure that our children and grandchildren have a stable, prosperous and bright future," added the premier. "In year one, we undertook initiatives that help those who need help most in society and, at the same time, we took aggressive steps to kick our economic engine into high gear.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank my caucus for their hard work and dedication over the past year. I would also like to thank our public sector employees for your contributions and commitment to the people of the province. Though much has been achieved, there is still much work to be done and our government looks forward to continuing with the implementation of our agenda and the opportunities which lay ahead."
