Rural Secretariat dialogue excellent opportunity for government, community to exchange ideas on a vision for rural Newfoundland and Labrador

Premier Danny Williams and Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Minister responsible for the Rural Secretariat, said yesterdays discussions were very constructive and provided solid direction on the further development of the Rural Secretariat.

Premier Williams and Minister Dunderdale were in Port Blandford yesterday to meet with representatives from social, economic, youth, womens, business and other stakeholder groups, as well as the federal and provincial governments, to gather input into the role and mandate of the Rural Secretariat.

"The day was very productive and, in my opinion, a great success," said Premier Williams. "This session provided an opportunity for various groups and individuals to come together to discuss a common vision for rural Newfoundland and Labrador. I have made a strong commitment to the people of our rural communities, that our government will work toward ensuring a vibrant and successful rural Newfoundland and Labrador now and into the future. Our Rural Secretariat will facilitate the process that will help us achieve this. Yesterdays session provided for an opportunity for excellent discussions with some good, honest feedback which we will consider as we move forward with plans for the Rural Secretariat."

Morning discussions focused on the vision of what rural Newfoundland and Labrador will look like by 2010. In the afternoon, the participants talked about the processes needed to ensure that the dialogue between government, communities and individuals at the grassroots level continues so we can achieve the vision.

"I was encouraged by the level of passion the participants demonstrated for rural Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Dunderdale. "If we want to realize the potential of this province, it is critical we work together. I think we all left the session with a commitment to move the social and economic development of the province forward together."
