Premier Williams expresses his condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the recent tragedy off Cape Bonavista

Premier Danny Williams today expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the two fisherman from St. Brendan’s who lost their lives at sea on Sunday in the Cape Bonavista area.

"I wish to express my heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of these two young gentleman," said Premier Williams. "I cannot begin to imagine the tragedy, heartache and loss felt by the loved ones of these two individuals. On behalf of the people of the province and my family, I wish to assure those affected that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time."

The premier acknowledged that this province’s historic relationship with the sea has been conflicting. "We have relied upon the bounty of the sea as a people for generations; however, we have also suffered terrible tragedies and sacrificed brave men and women to the waters off our coast. Today, we pay tribute to two of these individuals, who will be missed and fondly remembered by their friends and family."

The premier also expressed his gratitude to the residents of the area, who along with members of the Canadian Coast Guard, placed their lives in harm’s way to save members of the vessel Ryan’s Commander. "Those people who risked their lives to help strangers must be commended for their efforts. I have no doubt that their actions saved lives that night, and they are true heros."
