Minister proclaims Sexual Violence Awareness Week

Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, has proclaimed September 13-18, as Sexual Violence Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. She was joined by representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre for todays proclamation signing.

"Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the highest rates of reported sexual assaults in Atlantic Canada, " said Minister Burke. "That s why it is extremely important that we work together to raise awareness of this issue with the goal of ensuring that all citizens live in safe and caring communities."

Statistical data indicates that women represent the vast majority of sexual assaults and spousal assaults. Violence against women also tends to be more severe, frequent and cause more serious physical and psychological injury. The measurable health-related costs of violence gainst women in Canada exceed $1.5 billion a year. These costs include short-tem medical and dental treatment for injuries, long-term physical and psychological care, lost time at work and use of transition homes and crisis centres.

During Sexual Violence Awareness Week, the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre Inc. has organized a number of events including a silent auction, a benefit concert for the centre, and a youth poster-making night. The week culminates with the annual Take Back the Night March and Rally on the steps of City Hall on Friday, September 17.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to work in partnership with community groups such as the Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre through the Violence Prevention Initiative to improve policies, programs and services related to violence prevention and enhance capacity to reduce violence in our society," said Minister Burke. "I encourage all residents of this province to become involved in the activities of this week and recognize their own responsibility in ending violence against women.

In recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Week, flags will be flown at half mast at the Confederation Building today. On Wednesday, September 15, Minister Burke will also launch a revised Violence Prevention Initiative Web site and a brochure about date rape drugs. The brochure was produced in partnership with the Department of Health and Community Services and written by students from Memorial Universitys School of Social Work.
