(Executive Council)

The following statement, on the passing of former Senator Jack Marshall, was issued today by His Honour, the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Jack Marshall was a wonderful man and a wonderful public servant. He spoke for Newfoundland and Labrador in the Parliament of Canada for more than 20 years, 10 of them as the Member of Parliament for Humber-St. Georges-St. Barbe and another 10 as a Member of the Senate. He was devoted to his constituents and to his province. I know, from my own experience, that he is remembered with respect and fondness by all with whom he worked.

Jacks legacy touched many of our people. He was a tireless advocate for Canadas veterans. He spoke eloquently and effectively for them in the House of Commons and in the Senate, and helped to bring significant benefits to these men and women. And he spoke passionately when he felt that their contributions had not been recognized fully and fairly. Many of us still remember his strong but fair criticism of a CBC program which he believed defamed Canadas airmen and airwomen.

But Jack Marshall was more than a proud Newfoundlander and a very fine public servant. He was a kind and gentle man, who made friends wherever he went. He will be long remembered.

I know that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from every part of our province join with me in extending our sympathy to his son, Tom, and to the other members of his family. They have lost a much-loved father and grandfather. We have lost a much respected friend.
