Premier Williams expresses condolences to families of those killed and wounded in Afghanistan

Premier Danny Williams today expressed condolences to the family of Corporal Jamie Brendan Murphy of Conception Harbour, who was killed earlier today by an explosion near Kabul in Afghanistan while on duty with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. The Premier also sent the thoughts and best wishes of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to Corporal Jeremy Gerald MacDonald of Burnt Islands, and two other soldiers from Ontario and New Brunswick, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries by the same explosion.

"I am struck by the overwhelming emotion which descends upon us when we find out one of our own has been killed during active duty," said Premier Williams. "I want Corporal Murphys family to know that the hearts of every Newfoundlander and Labradorian are with them during this difficult time.

"A tragedy such as this one opens our eyes to the price we pay for peace in our world," said Premier Williams. "We owe the deepest gratitude to each and every soldier in their duty to make our world a better place."

Flags at Confederation Building have been lowered to half-mast in remembrance of Corporal Murphy.
