Newfoundland and Labrador celebrates Waste Reduction Week

Too Good to Waste! is the theme of this year's Waste Reduction Week (WRW) which is October 18-24. The Department of Environment and Conservation and MMSB are encouraging all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to "shrink their waste line" by trimming the amount of garbage they produce.

Each year, 480,000 tonnes of garbage is disposed of in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, great strides are being made to move the province toward reducing our waste production. During Waste Reduction Week, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can take part in activities and events at home, work, and school that focus on the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has a goal to reduce waste by 50 per cent and we remain committed to achieving this goal by 2010," said Tom Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Waste Reduction Week plays a vital role in helping us achieve this goal as it encourages everyone to look at ways to reduce the waste they generate at home, work, and school."

Waste Reduction Week is a national initiative to encourage Canadians to reduce their waste production. Newfoundland and Labrador joins this initiative by distributing activity kits and related educational information focusing on ways we can reduce waste in our everyday lives.

"Again his year, MMSB has joined with non-government, not-for-profit environment groups from across Canada, and from October 18-24, MMSB is encouraging all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to participate in activities that engage them to contribute to the solutions and success of waste-free living," said John Scott, chair and CEO of MMSB.
