Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act. 

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED: 

Crown Five Year Forest Mgt Plan Dist 20 (Sandwich Bay) 2005-09                  (Reg. 1156)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources (Forestry Branch)
 

The proponent has submitted a five-year operating plan for Forest Management District 20 (Sandwich Bay, Labrador Management District). Forest Management District 20 is located on the south coast of Labrador and is bounded to the north by Lake Melville, to the west by the Etagaulet and Paradise Rivers, and to the south by the Main and Hawke Rivers. The plan covers the operating period from January 2005 to December 2009. The plan describes past forestry activities, the allocation of wood supply and harvesting, road construction, silviculture activities and environmental protection. The plan describes proposed harvesting of approximately 30,085 cubic metres of timber per year (150,425 cubic metres total over the five-year period) by commercial and domestic harvesting and construction of 16 kilometres of forest roads to access mature and over mature forest stands. The undertaking was registered on September 17, 2004; public comments are due by October 22, 2004; and the minister's decision is due on November 1, 2004.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
