Minister launches "No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinics

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne today officially launched the "No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinic at the Holy Trinity Elementary School parking lot in Torbay. The vehicle emissions clinics are sponsored by the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation, Environment Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association.

The clinic provides motorists with free testing and assessments of pollution control equipment on their vehicles, such as a tailpipe exhaust emissions test and fuel cap pressure tests. Motorists are also given helpful tips on how to keep the emissions level low for the life of their vehicle.

Minister Osborne said government is committed to helping control air pollution and improve air quality in our province. "Protecting our environment is a priority for government, which we have demonstrated through such actions as strengthening the provinces Air Pollution Control Regulations," said Minister Osborne. "We all have a role to play in ensuring cleaner air and making our communities a better place to live, even if only in a small way. One way the public can help reduce emissions is by participating in a free Vehicle Emissions Clinic and have their vehicle tested."

The four-day Vehicle Emissions Clinic takes place August 17 - 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Holy Trinity Elementary School parking lot, Torbay - Tuesday, August 17
  • WalMart parking lot, Mount Pearl - Wednesday August 18
  • Village Shopping Centre parking lot, St. Johns - August 19 and 20.

"The Lung Association is proud to be a partner in the Vehicle Emissions Clinics in Newfoundland and Labrador" said Elizabeth Duff, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association. "The clinics help individuals realize how they can take steps to help our environment and protect the air we breathe."

"The Vehicle Emissions Clinic provides a no-cost incentive for Canadians to protect and conserve their natural environment with a well-maintained vehicle, while enhancing the well-being for all Canadians through improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gases," said Stphane Dion, Minister of the Environment. "These clinics enable Canadians to take action to address climate change, hazardous air pollutants and the costs related to smog-related illnesses."

The "No Fees, No Fines" slogan is meant to remind motorists that clinics are free of charge and there is no fine if a vehicle fails an emissions test. For vehicles that do fail testing, motorists will be given suggestions or recommendations for improvement.

"No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinics have been held throughout Newfoundland and Labrador since 1989.
