Atlantic Provinces Youth Hunting and Fishing Exchange Program winner announced

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne today announced that 18-year-old Ian Jacobs of West Port, Baie Verte Peninsula, is the Newfoundland and Labrador winner of the 2004 Atlantic Provinces Youth Hunting and Fishing Exchange Program.

Ian was chosen out of more than 400 young people who participated in Newfoundland and Labradors Firearm Safety/Hunter Education Course between July 2003 and June 2004. The draw was made by Prince Edward Islands exchange winner, 13-year-old Brett Doucette. Brett and his father Darryl visited our province in July and enjoyed a three-day salmon fishing trip on Grandys River near Burgeo.

Ian will travel with his father, Ross Jacobs, to Prince Edward Island in October to participate in a three-day Canada Goose hunt being hosted by the Prince Edward Island Wildlife Federation and PEIs Department of Environment and Energy, Conservation and Management Division.

"I extend congratulations to Ian for being chosen to participate in this years youth exchange program," said Minister Osborne. "I am sure that Ian will learn a lot from his experiences in Prince Edward Island. I wish Ian and his father a safe journey and safe hunting experience. "

Minister Osborne said the Atlantic Provinces Youth Hunting and Fishing Exchange Program, which is endorsed by the Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, acknowledges the culture and heritage of hunting and fishing in the Atlantic region and recognizes the importance of involving youth in the pursuit of outdoor activities.

"The exchange program is a wonderful way for young people from all over Atlantic Canada to appreciate and experience the unique hunting and fishing opportunities that we have in our province," said the minister. "Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and visitors to our province are keenly interested in hunting and fishing, and we truly recognize the cultural and economic value these activities provide."

The minister added that the youth exchange program helps us to ensure that the conservation and protection of our wildlife resources and wild places are maintained for future generations. Sponsors for the youth exchange program include the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association, Newfoundland Sportsman Magazine, Partridge Forever Society, Complete Gunsmithing Services and Layden Lake Outfitters. The minister thanked all sponsors for their contributions to this program.
