Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Abitibi-Consolidated District 12 Warfords Additional Harvest              (Reg. 1143)
Proponent: Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada

The proponent proposes to harvest a total of approximately 15,970 cubic metres of mature timber, representing approximately 126.7 hectares, within two harvest areas near Red Indian Lake in central Newfoundland. The proposed harvest areas are outside the current District 12 five-year forest operating plan and include approximately 3.6 kilometres of new operational roads to be constructed. Harvesting is tentatively scheduled for summer/fall of 2004. The undertaking was registered on July 13, 2004; public comments are due by August 18, 2004; and, the minister's decision is due on August 27, 2004.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Little Harbour (Deer Lake) Residential Development                          (Reg. 1125)
Proponent: Lakeside Investments Inc.

The mnister has released the Little Harbour (Deer Lake) residential development from further environmental assessment subject to the following conditions:

  • A buffer zone plan must be developed and approved by the Inland Fish and Wildlife Division and the Water Resources Management Division.
  • Approval must be obtained from the Parks and Natural Areas Division and Crown Lands Division for any use or rerouting of the T'Railway Provincial Park around the development. An alternate route must be in place and to the acceptability of the Parks and Natural Areas Division prior to any work at the site.
