Minister commends Exploits Regional Services Board

Environment Minister Tom Osborne today commended the Exploits Regional Services Board on its recent decision to not accept cardboard at its incinerator. The minister said such a move will assist the province in reaching its goal of reducing the amount of waste going to landfills by 50 per cent.

Minister Osborne said he is pleased with the Exploits Regional Services Board's pro-active approach to prudent waste management. "I wish to take this opportunity to applaud the board for its actions, as well as other municipalities around the province for their waste diversion efforts."

The minister encouraged all municipalities to recycle and help minimize the amount of garbage going to incinerators and waste disposal sites. "We all have to do our part in ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment," said the minister. "Government is committed to progressive and modern waste management in Newfoundland and Labrador, and communities around the province will play a key role in helping us achieve this goal."

Minister Osborne added that over the next few months he will be looking at ways to have similar cardboard bans throughout the province.
