Community Access Program Day celebrations

Education Minister Tom Hedderson is pleased to announce that tomorrow, November 27, Community Access Program (CAP) sites throughout the province will celebrate their second annual CAP Day.

"The Community Access Program provides a vital link between many communities in Newfoundland and Labrador and information technologies," said Minister Hedderson. "We currently have approximately 165 sites that are providing invaluable resources to individuals who would otherwise not have access to a computer or the World Wide Web. It is fitting that once a year, we take one day to celebrate all that CAP has to offer."

Participating Community Access sites will be holding open houses and having demonstrations throughout the day to show their communities what is available at these centres. There will also be training sessions, refreshments and prizes.

"I encourage everyone to visit their local CAP site on Saturday and check out all they have to offer," the minister said. "In addition to supplying affordable Internet access, a typical CAP site offers the use of digital cameras, scanning and printing facilities, and a knowledgeable staff to provide help and guidance. It truly is an invaluable program for people of all ages."

CAP was launched in 1995 to provide Canadians with affordable access to the Internet and the skills to use it effectively. In 1998 the federal government and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador partnered to bring the CAP program to this province. CAP is now responding to the challenge of ensuring that the nationwide network of sites is maintained and continues to benefit the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador.
