World Teachers' Day

Education Minister Tom Hedderson today invites all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to join him in applauding the more than 5800 teachers throughout the province, who are at the heart of the educational process.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated October 5 as World Teachers' Day. Over 100 countries observe World Teachers' Day, recognizing the invaluable work done by teachers around the globe.

"As a former teacher, I understand the many challenges teachers face in today's classroom," said Minister Hedderson. "I also know that at the end of the day, there is no profession more rewarding or fulfilling. It is fitting that one day each year is set aside to formally recognize teachers and to thank them for the remarkable work they perform, day in and day out, for the good of our students.

"I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians today to reflect on the critical importance of teachers and the teaching profession to this province. We have entrusted them with our future, and they deserve our thanks."

The theme for this year's World Teachers' Day is "Quality Teachers for Quality Education". The minister noted that this theme highlights the key role teachers play in the education system. "We have some of the most highly-qualified teachers in the country. They are an exceptional group of professionals dedicated to the education and well-being of our students. Their commitment often goes beyond the classroom and has a profound effect on the lives of our young people and our province. They deserve to be recognized for their energy, drive, enthusiasm and leadership."

UNESCO inaugurated October 5 as World Teachers' Day in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers on October 5, 1966. World Teachers' Day also highlights the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel adopted in 1997.
