CDLIs reputation continues to grow

Education Minister John Ottenheimer is pleased to announce that Newfoundland and Labradors Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) is once again being recognized for its innovation. Over the past several years, CDLI has been converting high school courses to a combined direct teacher delivery and on-line format. Currently, 35 courses are being offered in 95 schools with more than 1,500 student registrations. As an additional learning tool, CDLI has recently developed on-line tutorials for public exam courses, including mathematics.

At the recent meeting of the Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET), ministers from the other Atlantic Provinces requested that CDLI expand the math tutorials and make them available for use by levels two and three high school students throughout all the Atlantic Provinces. "I am extremely proud of how our centre is helping our students and that its success is being recognized by my fellow education ministers. Our staff will further develop on-line tutorials for use by other Canadian students, in addition to students in this province," said Minister Ottenheimer.

Students who click on to the math tutorials receive an introduction to the mathematical concept and learning objective. There is an audio explanation of the concept provided by a teacher, and this is accompanied by an electronic blackboard where the virtual teacher works through concepts as they would in a regular classroom. This electronic blackboarding will include other learning aids such as diagrams, animations and Web links where students can access supplementary information. The learning clips will be searchable by course, level or topic. The on-line tutorials will also include some short video clips and should be available to students throughout the Atlantic Provinces by March 2005.

"At the CAMET meeting, I was able to share the progressive and innovative things that are happening in our education system here in Newfoundland and Labrador. CDLI is one of those great things. Clearly, we are leading the way in distance learning and our students are reaping the benefits," said the minister.

To date, approximately 800 tutorials have been developed by experts in the field and are available to students throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Learning clips are also available in Biology 3201, Earth Systems 3209, English 3201, French 3200, Mathematics 3205, Mathematics 3204, Physics 3204, World Geography 3202 and World History 3201, and are available throughout the year. Students wishing to avail of this service are encouraged to log onto the CDLI Web site at www.cdli.ca to request a user name and password.
