NLIS 3 September 8, 2004 (Education) Education minister announces funding for adult literacy centres Education minister John Ottenheimer is pleased to announce today the distribution of almost $260,000 to seven non-profit community-based adult literacy organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding between $20,000 - $70,700 has been awarded to deliver adult literacy programs for the period September 2004 to June 2005. "I am very pleased that the Department of Education is able to support these important services through its provincial literacy grants," stated Minister Ottenheimer. "Improving accessibility to adult literacy programs is an important part of government's agenda for a rejuvenated Newfoundland and Labrador. Providing accessible literacy programming means more people will be able to avail of these services, thus helping to build a strong foundation for social and economic growth. "Today is International Literacy Day, thus there is no better time to make this important announcement. It is no secret that improved literacy levels lead to improved labour market participation. We are pleased to provide this funding and hope it encourages those interested in improving literacy investigate the options available. "
