Minister presents national GED award

Minister of Education John Ottenheimer, was joined by MHA for the District of St. John's Centre, Shawn Skinner, today to present the 2002 National Award for Outstanding Achievement on the General Educational Development (GED) tests, to Jim Goodland of St. John's.

In recognition of Mr. Goodland's accomplishment, Minister Ottenheimer also presented him with a $1,000 scholarship from the Department of Education.

"Mr. Goodland should be proud of his accomplishment in completing the GED program and should be congratulated for receiving the highest score among all candidates in the province who wrote the tests in 2002," said Minister Ottenheimer.

As a husband and father, Jim Goodland recognized that educational opportunities were still within his reach and would provide new opportunities. He offers sound advice for those who may have given up on their high school education. "It's never too late to start again and make some very positive changes in your life."

Shawn Skinner, MHA for the District of St. John's Centre, commended Mr. Goodland for his efforts and positive attitude. "This achievement and his positive perspective will certainly open the door for further success."

"The Department of Education recognizes the GED credential as a high school equivalency and is proud to participate in a testing program that provides an opportunity for adults to receive a high school diploma," said Minister Ottenheimer.
