Early childhood literacy
grants announced
Education Minister John Ottenheimer is
pleased to announce the recent approval of approximately $195,000 in grants
for early childhood literacy/family literacy programs. This funding was
provided through the Department of Education's grant allocation from the
Stepping into the future early childhood development initiative.
"The foundations of literacy and
numeracy at a young age are essential to lifelong learning. The approved
grants will contribute to the early development of many young children
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Ottenheimer.
The minister acknowledged the work of an
extensive network of provincial literacy organizations. "I wish to
commend the members of these and other literacy organizations who have made
a valuable contribution, through their efforts and initiative, to the
children of our province."
"Government recognizes the far-reaching
value of early education for young children. This commitment was reaffirmed
in the 2004 Speech from the Throne and Budget 2004, with the establishment
of a Ministerial Council for Early Childhood Learning. The council will
foster comprehensive programs across all government departments and agencies
and will focus on the learning needs of children and their families,"
said Minister Ottenheimer. The minister indicated he would be announcing
further details on the Ministerial Council on Early Childhood Learning in
the near future.
The following 27 proposals from non-profit
community-based organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador were
recommended by the Strategic Literacy Funding Committee in accordance with
priorities stated in the Literacy Grants Application Package, with awards
ranging from $1,000 to $30,000.
