Minister recommends further consultation on tax incentive

Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education Minister Anna Thistle met with student groups this afternoon regarding a proposed provincial tax incentive for post-secondary students and graduates.

Starting this tax year, the incentive would provide a non-refundable tax credit on the principal payments of Newfoundland and Labrador Student Loans. Three million dollars was allocated in Budget 2003 for such a program.

"It was an extremely valuable meeting, and many views on how the money could be spent were presented," said Minister Thistle. "The participants raised a number of good suggestions as to how this incentive can be targeted to those most needing assistance. I have asked those present to provide their views to me in writing by Wednesday, June, 4, so that we can implement the best possible program."
