2003 Tutoring/Work Experience Program announced

Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education Minister Anna Thistle has announced the 2003 Tutoring/Work Experience Program which provides post-secondary students the opportunity to earn money towards the cost of their education, while receiving meaningful work experience related to their field of study. This program was first offered in 2002.

The Student Investment Opportunities Corporation has allocated $250,000 for this years program, scheduled to commence in late April or early May. In 2002, 172 student tutors provided 313,818 hours of tutoring time through this program.

"Under this initiative, post-secondary students provide tutoring services in their hometowns, to high school students who are preparing for final exams," explained Minister Thistle. "In exchange for this valuable service, the post-secondary students receive approximately six weeks of work, post-secondary tuition vouchers and a weekly stipend of $50."

The Tutoring/Work Experience Program was developed in consultation with the provinces 11 school boards, under the direction of a provincial advisory committee. The committee is comprised of representatives from the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, Department of Education, school boards and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association.

Anyone wishing to obtain employment in this program is encouraged to contact their former high school.
