Youth of the Year Awards

Monday, March 24, 2003

Mr. Speaker: I rise today to acknowledge the recipients of the second annual Newfoundland and Labrador Youth of the Year Awards. These awards, which provide a $500 scholarship to each of the winners were established to recognize the outstanding achievements of youth ages 15 to 30, who contribute to the social and economic development of our province.

The awards were developed by Futures In Newfoundland and Labradors Youth (FINALY!), in partnership with the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Youth and Youth-related issues are of high priority to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and we could make no greater investment - than in young people.

I was honoured this morning to help present awards to five of our provinces most outstanding young people: Olivia Heaney of Mount Pearl in the Expression category; Niraj Shukla of St. Johns for Innovation; Jay McGrath of Branch for Heritage; Lisa Saunders of Bay Bulls in the Linkages category; and Amy Parsons of Twillingate for Vision.

These individuals have joined us in the Gallery today and I ask all members of this House to join with me in congratulating them on their accomplishments.

Thank-you Mr. Speaker.
