Minister to host tree lighting ceremony

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Tom Rideout will host the 17th annual Christmas Lights Across Canada ceremony on Thursday, December 4. The event is held in conjunction with similar tree lighting ceremonies in Ottawa and other provincial and territorial capitals. The Christmas Lights Across Canada ceremony is an event organized nationally by the National Capital Commission.

"Christmas Lights Across Canada symbolically links Canadas provinces and territories with the nations capital, so that we all share in the holiday spirit together," said Minister Rideout. "The ceremony is all about what we celebrate at Christmas: generosity, hospitality and community, peace on earth and goodwill for all."

Minister Rideout will be joined by the Cowan Heights Elementary School Choir, the Salvation Army Citadel Band and local performer and master of ceremonies Anita Best. The celebration will be held on the front steps of the Confederation Building, East Block at approximately 6:15 p.m.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. Minister Rideouts daughters, Margaret and Kara-Lynn, will throw the switch to illuminate the 60,000 lights that will decorate Confederation Building and Prince Philip Parkway throughout the Christmas season.

"This is one of my more pleasant duties," said the minister. "It is a great pleasure to participate in this delightful event and to wish all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a safe and joyous holiday season."

Following the tree lighting, refreshments will be provided in the foyer of the East Block of Confederation Building. The public and media representatives are invited to attend.
