Premier officially launches construction of new
Supreme Court facility for Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Premier Roger Grimes participated in a sod turning ceremony today to officially mark the start of construction of a new Supreme Court House in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The event was held at the site of the new facility on Hamilton River Road.

"In our 2002 Budget, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador committed to making improvements to the supreme and provincial court facilities in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Since then, we have completed major renovations to the Provincial Court facilities and now we are set to begin construction of a brand new Supreme Court building," said Premier Grimes. "Today, we have re-affirmed this governments commitment to ensuring the people of this province have access to the necessary services and facilities for the effective administration of justice."

Government recently awarded a contract of $2,082,000 to Colby Construction Ltd. to design and build the 800 m facility.

"With construction beginning in the coming weeks and resuming in the spring, we are expecting this facility will be completed and ready to be opened by September of 2004," said Works, Services and Transportation Minister Jim Walsh. "The new Supreme Court House will be a great addition to the other facilities and services the provincial government provides to the people of Labrador."

"I am pleased this project is moving ahead as the new Supreme Court facility will make court services more accessible for Labrador residents and will address the operational requirements of the Supreme Court," said Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons.

"Building this new facility is just one of many commitments this Government has made to the people of Labrador," said Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Wally Andersen. "I am proud to be associated with a government that keeps its commitments. I look forward to seeing this facility completed."
