Transportation minister sets record straight on Labrador marine services

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Jim Walsh says governments decision to operate Labrador marine services out of Cartwright stands.

Minister Walsh said comments made in a news release by the Lewisporte and Area Chamber of Commerce and Town Council may have misled the public into believing government is reconsidering operating from Lewisporte. "There is no question government intends to operate marine services out of Labrador."

Minister Walsh said he received a proposal from the Lewisporte and Area Chamber of Commerce yesterday, which he will review and discuss with the community when he visits the area in two weeks.

"I want to help the community of Lewisporte move forward. That is why I encouraged the chamber to submit a plan which included possible uses of the terminal facility and ideas on how to encorporate the current employees into future plans. I welcome the proposal they submitted yesterday and I intend to continue to work with them on this matter," said Minister Walsh.

"Up to this point in time, I have been working very much in cooperation with the chamber and the council. Needless to say I was disappointed when they issued this statement and I learned the protest is continuing. Nevertheless, it is my intention to visit Lewisporte and discuss the proposal submitted to me."
