Container freight moving to Labrador north coast

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Jim Walsh and Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Wally Andersen announced today that freight is now ready to be shipped to the north coast of Labrador.

Minister Walsh said his department has placed the vessel MV Saint Oran in service while details on the contracted vessel, MV Nada, are being finalized.

"We intend to get container freight moving from Cartwright to the north coast right away," said Minister Walsh. "Anyone wishing to ship cargo to northern Labrador should immediately start sending their freight to Cartwright." Minister Walsh added that although details on freight rates have yet to be released, he asks shippers to keep their bills of lading.

The Saint Oran is currently docked in Cartwright. The vessel, which is loaded with 30 containers, is waiting for winds to subside before heading to Makkovik and ports north. Winds are expected to subside this evening.

"As a government, we felt it was imperative to get freight moving to the north coast of Labrador as quickly as possible," said Minister Andersen. "Hopefully this will provide some immediate relief until the Nada assumes its service."

Anyone wanting information on arrival and departure times for the various ports should call 1-866-535-2567, Option 1.
