Minister optimistic about Straits crossing

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Jim Walsh said he is optimistic the MV Apollo will be able to make its first run of the season across the Strait of Belle Isle tomorrow morning. Marine services on the Straits were scheduled to begin May 1 but were unable to do so because of ice conditions.

"My officials have been working very closely with the Coast Guard on this matter and we believe the Apollo should be able to make a run, with the assistance of an ice breaker, tomorrow morning," said Minister Walsh.

If conditions permit, the Apollo will depart Blanc Sablon at 8:00 a.m. and depart St. Barbe at 2:00 p.m.

"Unfortunately, ice conditions are beyond our control but everyone involved has been very cooperative," said Minister Walsh. "I would like to thank the residents in the area for their patience and understanding and I would also like to thank the Canadian Coast Guard for their assistance with this matter. I sincerely hope ice and weather conditions cooperate so we can get the regular service up and running."
