Contract awarded for Labrador marine service

Jim Walsh, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Wally Andersen, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs and MHA for Torngat Mountains, announced today government has awarded the contract for the Labrador coastal passenger and freight service.

At an annual cost of $6,538,024, Labrador Marine Incorporated submitted the lowest bid meeting tender specifications. The contract includes the operation of the MV Sir Robert Bond and MV Northern Ranger as well as the provision of shore-based activities including freight handling, reservations, passenger services and terminal management. The duration of the contract is five years, with an option to extend the contract for an additional five years. The service is scheduled to begin June 10, ice conditions permitting.

"We believe the reconfigured marine services along the coast of Labrador will enhance transportation for individuals and businesses using the service. Labrador communities serviced by the provincial ferry system will see vessels on a more frequent and consistent basis than in the past," said Minister Walsh.

Government intends to move forward with plans to use Cartwright as its southern terminal, but will continue to use the Lewisporte terminal in the off season to perform dockside maintenance on the two vessels.

Minister Walsh said marine services have been re-evaluated as a result of the ongoing construction of the Trans-Labrador Highway. "I plan to visit communities along the north coast of Labrador early in May with Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister and Torngat Mountains MHA Wally Andersen to discuss the delivery of the service, including tariff structures and schedules," said Minister Walsh.

Government also called tenders for the Cartwright to Nain freight service and a southern Labrador passenger-freight service. Bids for these two tenders are still being evaluated. Successful companies will be announced upon completion of the evaluation of the bids.
