Transportation minister provides update on road conditions in St. Anthony area

Jim Walsh, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, said staff in his department have been able to open some of the main roads in the St. Anthony area after a severe blizzard closed all highways and resulted in many children being stranded in the areas schools.

Due to the storms severity, the departments equipment was unable to operate on Wednesday and Thursday when high winds made working conditions unsafe. When conditions improved on Friday, staff started opening roads. Crews are now focusing their attention on opening the road to Goose Cove so that children stranded there can get home. At present, crews are half way to the community and expect to have that road open early this evening. Work is progressing on opening other roads in the area. The minister said his winter maintenance officials estimate the storm cleanup operation may take three to four days provided weather conditions remain favourable.

The minister said the department is moving equipment from other areas to assist with snow clearing efforts. "We plan to move a snow blower from the Corner Brook area to St. Anthony today and are endeavoring to hire additional loaders for the area," said Minister Walsh. "We are certainly doing everything possible to get our roads in the area open as soon as possible."
