Local swimmer to compete for Canada in Australia

The St. John's Legends Swim Club along with their provincial sport organization, Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, are pleased to announce that Laura Murray (13) has been selected to attend an international training camp and competition in Brisbane, Australia from December 26 through January 19, 2004.

Laura was selected by eight-time Olympic coach and Swimming/Natation Canada's national junior coach, Deryk Snelling, along with three other athletes from the Atlantic Provinces he believes "have great promise in the prospects category for SNC." Select athletes from across the country will represent Canada's best young swimmers as part of the Junior National Team in the Queensland Open/Age Group Championships, January 4-9th, 2004 at the Chandler Aquatic Centre.

Laura was selected for the team based on her performances at this past summer's Club National Championships in Calgary, where she won four national age group champion titles and two silver medals for the Newfoundland and Labrador Team. Laura, who turns 14 at the end of November, trains out of the Aquarena and MURC Complex in St John's. This will be Laura's first major international competition.

Laura's coach, Paul Dawe, of the St John's Legends stated that this is exactly the kind of exposure our elite athletes need to develop their potential. "This is something that Laura has worked very hard for and is the result of a high level of dedication and determination."
