Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Awards winners

Saturday night in St. John�s the winners of the Annual Provincial Sport Awards were announced. With just under 150 people in attendance, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador recognized the achievements of the province�s best for 2002. Molson is the major corporate supporter of the Annual Awards Banquet.

The Margaret Davis Memorial Award for the Provincial Junior Female Athlete of the Year went to Vicki Flood of Tennis. Vicki did not lose a set this past year in Newfoundland. As a junior, she won the Triple Crown at last summer�s senior provincials. She also took home gold medals from the 2002 Atlantic Outdoor Championships as well as first place in the Atlantic Canadian Circuit. At Junior Nationals, Vicki advanced to the forth round in singles and quarterfinals in doubles competition.

The Joe Mullins Memorial Award for the Provincial Junior Male Athlete of the Year went to Andrew Fagan of Rugby. Andrew played as an underage player for Canada at the World Under 19 Championships in Italy. Andrew was the captain of Newfoundland�s Under 18 Team and also played for The Rock, Senior Team, where his teams both captured silver medals at the national level.

The Elizabeth Swan Memorial Award for the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Female Athlete of the Year went to Jenine Browne of Basketball. Jenine led her MUN Varsity Team to the AUS crown last winter and a fifth place at Nationals. In doing so, she claimed many individual awards and honours, including; AUS Regular Season plus Playoff MVP, AUS and CIS Top Scorer with 21.1 points per game. Jenine was named a CIS First Team All Star as well as a member of the Canadian National Junior Team who competed at the World Juniors in Brazil.

The Ferd Heyward Memorial Award for the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Male Athlete of the Year went to Carl English of Basketball. Carl played for the University of Hawaii in NCAA competition. His team�s top scorer, last season he led the Warriors to the NCAA Tournament (Top 64 of almost 300 teams). Last season, Carl was one of only 50 nominees for theJohn R. Wooden Award. Last season he was named to the Western Conference Second All Star Team and began this season as a Preseason All Star. In October he was named the MVP in the Nike Tip Off Tournament. Carl was recently featured in a three-page article in Sports Illustrated.

The Graham Snow Memorial Award for the Newfoundland and Labrador Executive of the Year went to Glen Normore of Basketball. Glenn has represented Canada as a member of Federation International Basketball Association, America. In 2002 he attended the World Basketball Congress in Greece as well as served as Treasurer for the Commonwealth Basketball Federation. He led the decision to have basketball included in the Commonwealth Games as well as initiating several points to promote gender equity in international basketball. He was also one of seven members of the Board of Directors of Basketball Canada.

The John Drinkwater Memorial Award for the Province�s Coach of the Year went to Clem (Junior) Edwards of soccer. Clem coached the St. Lawrence Laurentians to the Provincial Challenge Cup with a 16-1-4 record. Junior then had his team ready for the National Championships in St. John�s. Playing in front of thousands for every game, the Laurentians racked up wins of 1-0 over BC, 1-1 with Quebec, and 3-1 over Alberta before losing 1-0 to Manitoba in double over time.

The Edward Browne Memorial Award for the Team of the Year went to the St. Lawrence Laurentians. The Laurentians claimed a National Silver medal in front of over 8,000 fans at King George V in October after pressing Manitoba into double overtime. Locally, they racked up a 16-1-4 record to claim the Provincial Challenge Cup and placed five players on the all-star team.

Overall, Sport Newfoundland & Labrador received 48 nominations for the seven awards.
