The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador provincial cross country running this weekend

Fatima Academy in St. Brides is the host school for the Provincial High School Cross Country Running Championships scheduled for this Saturday. Qualification meets have been held across the province and the top teams and individuals will converge on St. Brides to battle for the provincial titles and championship banners.

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador sponsors a junior boys, junior girls, senior boys and senior girls division and will declare winners, individual and team winners in each. In addition, the host school is sponsoring an elementary race in the morning. The junior girls race is scheduled for 1 p.m and will be run over a 2000 m course. Teams competing for the provincial banner include, St. Edwards (Placentia), St. Lawrence Academy, Baie Verte High, King Academy (Harbour Breton), Stephenville High, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point). Joining them will be individual runners from Holy Trinity (Torbay), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove), Regina High (Corner Brook), Menihek High (Labrador City), Cloud River Academy (Roddickton) and Victoria All Grade (Gaultois)

The junior boys race is a course of 3000 m and will start at 1:45 p.m. Teams involved include Baltimore High (Ferryland), Pearce Jr. High (Burin), Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Presentation Jr. High (Corner Brook) and Roncalli High (Port Saunders). Individuals from the following schools will race for gold, silver and bronze medals: St. Lawrence Academy, Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point, Appalachia High (St. George�s), Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour), Coaker Academy(Summerford), Amalgamated Academy (Bay Roberts) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island).

The senior girls race is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and will also be a 3000 m course. The team total will be decided among Baltimore High (Ferryland), Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), St. Peters Academy (Westport), Stephenville High, Roncalli High (Avondale), and Mealy Mountain High (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). Also competing in the senor girls will be runners from Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour), St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Fogo Island Central High, Baie Verte High, John Burke High (Grand Bank), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island)

The last race of the day, scheduled for 3:15 is the 5000 m senior boys event. The team competition will feature Baltimore High, Marystown Central High, Glovertown Academy, St. Peters Academy (Westport), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) Roncalli High and Mealy Mountain High (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). Joining in the individual competition will be athletes from Menihek High (Labrador City), Viking Trail Academy, Ascension Collegiate, Regina High, Appalachia High, Baie Verte High, Indian River High (Springdale) and Victoria All Grade (Gaultois).

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. Individual awards of gold, silver and bronze will be presented.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
