The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador boys soccer and girls slo pitch this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will crown four new provincial champions this coming weekend. Two boys soccer titles will be decided, as well as two girls slo pitch.

Carbonear Collegiate will host the six team boys 4A soccer championship. Division 1 will see action from Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), O�Donel High (Mount Pearl) and Stephenville High. Division 2 will see action from Bishops College (St. John�s), Marystown Central High and Carbonear Collegiate. Games are scheduled for 9:00 , 12:30 and 4:00 on Friday. The top teams from each division will meet in the semi-finals 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The winners of these games will meet in a 1 p.m. championship game.

Six teams are also involved in the boys 3A soccer championships scheduled for Indian River High in Springdale. The host school will compete against Templeton Collegiate (Gillams) and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) in Division B. Competing in Division A will be Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Mobile Central High. Two games are scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 1 and 3 followed by a skills competition. The round robin games continue throughout Friday starting at 10 a.m. Saturday will see the top two teams from each division squaring off in the semi finals at 8:30 and 10:30. The championship game will follow at 2 p.m.

The top high school girls slo-pitch softball teams will also be in action this coming weekend. Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista will host the 4A girls event, which will feature six teams competing in a double round robin format. Division 1 will consist of the host school, Discovery Collegiate along with Roncalli High (Avondale) and Holy Trinity High (Torbay). Division 2 will have Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Laval High (Placentia) and Stephenville High facing off. Games will be played at both the Bonavista and the Port Union fields starting at 10:30 a.m Friday. The last round robin game will be played Saturday morning followed by the semi-final games at 11:00 and 12:30. The championship game will go ahead at 2:30 p.m.

Cape John Collegiate in LaScie will be the host school for the 3A Girls Slo-Pitch Provincials. Seven teams will compete in a two division round robin format to determine the provincial champion. Division 1 will consist of the host, Cape John Collegiate, St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), St. John Central High (Burgeo) and Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). Competing in Division 2 will be Baltimore High (Ferryland), Sacred Heart High (Conche) and J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate). Games get underway 10 a.m., Friday and continue throughout the day. Round robin action continues Saturday morning. The semi-final games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 2:30 with the championship game set for 4 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador have expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
