The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador starting season this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador kicks off its provincial championship schedule this coming weekend with four provincial tournaments slated to go ahead. The boys will take to the softball fields while the girls head to the soccer pitch to try for the provincial banner.

The 4A Boys slo-pitch tournament will be co-hosted by Queen Elizabeth High in Foxtrap and Holy Spirit in Manuels. Eight teams will take to Parsons Field in Seal Cove and Nugent�s Field in Kelligrews to compete in a two division round robin set up. Division A will play out of Parsons Field and will include Queen Elizabeth High, Stephenville High, Carbonear Collegiate and Leo Burke (Bishop�s Falls). Playing in Division B at Nugent�s Field will be Holy Spirit High, Bishops College (St. John�s), Laval High (Placentia) and Marystown Central High. Games get underway 10:45 a.m. Friday morning at both fields. Four games in each division will be played Friday with the two remaining round robin games in each division set for 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The top two teams from each division will play in the cross over games at 12:30 and 2:00 p.m. at Parsons Field. The championship game is set for 3:30 p.m. at Parsons Field.

The 3A Boys Slo Pitch tournament is being hosted by Dunne Academy in St. Mary�s. Five teams will compete in the Red Division at St. Mary�s and five teams will compete in the Blue Division at Gaskers. The Red Division will consist of the host, Dunne Academy, Mobile High, Christ the King Academy (Rushoon), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony) and Point Leamington Academy. Competing for top placing in the Blue Division will be Baltimore High (Ferryland) Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove), Roncalli High (Port Saunders), Templeton Collegiate (Gilliams) and Fogo Island High. Games get underway at 8:00 a.m. at both fields with round robin play. Six games will be played in each division on Friday with the remaining round robin games starting 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The semi-final games will be played at 2:30 p.m. involving the top teams from each division. The championship game is set for 4:30 p.m. at the St. Mary�s Field.

Holy Heart of Mary in St. John�s will be the host school for the Girls 4A Soccer Provincial Championships. Six teams will compete in a two division format. The Signal Hill Division will see action from Holy Heart, Holy Spirit (Manuels) and Marystown Central High. The round robin games for that division will be played at Fieldian Grounds. The Fort Amherst Division will play out of the Bowering Park Field and will see action from Mount Pearl Senior High, Gonzaga High (St. John�s) and Regina High from Corner Brook. Games at both fields are scheduled for Thursday at 3:30 p.m., and Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Semi-final action is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The championship game will be played at 3:00 p.m.

Indian River High in Springdale is the host school for the 3A Girls Soccer Championships. Six teams will compete in two divisions for the right to advance to the semi-final games. Division A will consist of St. Lawrence Academy, Mobile Central High and Gander Collegiate. Division B will consist of Stephenville High, Indian River High and Holy Name Mary (Lawn). Games are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a skills competition. Games are 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 on Friday. The top teams advance to the playoff games, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, has expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
