The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school cross country skiing championships
scheduled for March 15 in Plum Point

The Provincial High School Cross Country Skiing Championships are scheduled to get underway this weekend on the Northern Peninsula. Viking Trail Academy (formally Plum Point School Complex) are hosting the races, which will be held at Mount St. Margaret Cross Country Ski Trails. The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday followed by a full day of races starting at 11:00 a.m.

The Junior Girls Division will ski a 2.5 km course, junior boys and senior girls a 5 km course and the senior boys a 7.5 km course. All individual races will be run using the classic style. The relay races will follow the individual races and will all be a 1 km loop with the exception of the junior girls which will be a 0.5 km loop. The relay races will be skied in the freestyle technique. Relay races will consist of the top three from each team.

The following schools will be competing in the championships: Viking Trail Academy, Menihek High (Labrador City), Regina High (Corner Brook), Stephenville High, Pasadena Academy, Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove), St. Peters School (Benoits Cove) and St. James School (Lark Harbour).

All teams involved will be competing for gold and silver medals and the championship banner. As well, gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in the individual events. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented for each of the four divisions, sponsored by Crime Stoppers of Newfoundland and Labrador.

All the Federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
