The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school hockey championships scheduled this weekend

The High School Athletic Federation will crown two hockey champions this weekend. The 3A and 4A hockey titles are up for grabs in St. Anthony and Stephenville. Eight teams will be competing in each competition.

Harriot Curtis Collegiate in St. Anthony is the host school for the 3A event. Teams will be divided into two divisions of four for the round robin portion of the competition. Division A will consist of Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville), Mobile High School, Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Roncalli Central High (Port Saunders). Competing for top spot in division B will be the host Harriot Curtis Collegiate, King Academy (Harbour Breton), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island) and Pasadena Academy.

The schedule of games gets underway at 9:00 a.m., Thursday morning, and games will continue throughout the day. The opening ceremonies is set for 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening. The round robin games continue throughout Friday and are capped off with a skills competition at 7:00 p.m. The top two teams from each division advance to semi-final play Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The championship game will be played at 7:00 p.m., Saturday evening.

Eight teams will also converge on Stephenville this weekend for the 4A tournament. In addition to the high school championship banner, the Boyle Trophy will also be awarded at thistournament. The Boyle Trophy is the second oldest hockey trophy in Canada (second only to the Stanley Cup) and was first awarded in 1904. It was donated by Sir Cavendish Boyle, to the best amateur hockey team in Newfoundland. Throughout its history, up until the 1970's, it was awarded within the St. John�s Hockey League. Since 1981, it has been presented to the winning team in the 4A High School Hockey Championships.

Competing in the red division for this prestigious award will be the host, Stephenville High, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Mount Pearl Senior High and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts). The black division will see action from Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Carbonear Collegiate, Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s) and Lewisporte Collegiate. Games get underway 9:00 a.m. Thursday and continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division will meet Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

All teams involved will be competing for gold and silver medals and the championship banner. As well, the team sportsmanship banner will be awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the Federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
