School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Girls 3A,
and Boys 2A, 3A 4A volleyball tournaments this weekend

The last provincial high school tournaments before Christmas get underway this coming weekend in three locations around the province. Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts will host the Boys 4A Volleyball tournament featuring eight teams. Playing in Division 1 will be the host school - Ascension Collegiate, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. Johns), and Gander Collegiate. Competition in Division 2 will be between Clarenville High, Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Roncalli High (Avondale) and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). Along with Ascension Collegiate, Amalgamated Academy in Bay Roberts will also be one of the tournament venues. The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 1 p.m., Friday followed by the first matches at 2 p.m. at Ascension and 3:30 at Amalgamated Academy. The round robin will continue Saturday morning at Ascension Collegiate. The semi-finals will be played at 1 p.m and 2 p.m followed by the championship match at 3 p.m.

The brand new high school in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Mealy Mountain Collegiate, is the host school for the combined 3A Boys and Girls Volleyball provincials. The girls event will feature Mealy Mountain Collegiate, Menihek High (Labrador City), Lake Melville School (North West River), J.C. Erhardt High (Makkovik) and Smallwood Academy (Gambo). When a provincial tournament is held in Labrador, an island tournament is held prior to the provincial to determine a representative from the island as finances dictate that only one team can make that trip. The Labrador regional tournament is then held in conjunction with the provincial. The girls tournament gets underway 1 p.m. on Friday and continues throughout Friday and Saturday in a round robin format. The semi-finals are scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by the championship game.

The Boys 3A event will take place simultaneously with Mealy Mountain High, Menihek High, Lake Melville School, Amos Comenius (Hopedale) and Baie Verte High competing for the playoff positions.

The 2A Boys Volleyball Championships is scheduled for Valmont Academy in Kings Point. Ten teams have advanced through their qualification tournaments to the provincial. Playing in Division A will be Carmanville High, Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), St. Peters Academy (Westport), Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) and Fitzgerald Academy (English Hr. West). Competing in Division B will be Eric G. Lambert High (Churchill Falls), Mountain Field Academy (Forteau), Main River Academy (Sops Arm), Valmont Academy and Burgeo Academy.

Games get underway Thursday at 1 p.m. and continue throughout the day resuming at 9 a.m. Friday. The last of the 20 round robin matches will go ahead Saturday morning followed by the cross-overs at 12:30 and 1:30 with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, has expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
