Parks and Natural Areas participate in National Parks Day

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that nine provincial parks and two ecological reserves are participating in Parks Day - "Take a Hike", a celebration of parks and protected areas being held nationwide this year on Saturday, July 19.

"Parks Day is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to get out and enjoy the great outdoors," said Minister Bettney. "Visitors to our parks and ecological reserves will also learn what they can do as individuals to help protect our natural heritage."

Hundreds of parks, historic sites and waterways throughout the country will participate in Parks Day. The provincial parks participating in Newfoundland and Labrador include J. T. Cheeseman, Barachois Pond, Pistolet Bay, Pinware River, Notre Dame, Lockston Path, Dildo Run, Butter Pot, La Manche, and Cape St. Mary�s and Burnt Cape ecological reserves.

In this province, activities will take place over two days, July 19 and 20. These include a hike, environmental games, campfire programs and the "Honourary Park or Reserve Manager for a Day" contest. Winners of the contest will have breakfast with the staff, complete a site inspection and meet and greet campers.

"Our province has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world," said Minister Bettney. "Visiting our provincial parks and reserves provides one of the best ways to discover the true natural beauty of Newfoundland and Labrador. Parks Day shows our commitment to preserving and protecting our natural features for present and future generations."
