Big game licence draw completed

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the 2003 Big Game Draw for moose and caribou licences has been completed.

"Recent enhancements to the departments computer network allowed resident hunters to apply for the 2003 Big Game Licence Draw using the World Wide Web," said Minister Bettney. "Approximately 15 per cent of eligible hunters took advantage of this service."

The 2003-2004 application form for resident big game hunters provided a unique login ID and password allowing access to the site (www.wildlife.gov.nf.ca). Applicants who have lost the login information must request its replacement from the Inland Fish and Wildlife office, in either Corner Brook or St. Johns. This information will not be given out over the phone/fax; it will be mailed to the address listed in our database. This year, 55,128 applications involving 87,829 hunters were submitted for the Big Game Draw. Additionally, more than 20,000 other hunters submitted applications indicating that they wished only to advance their priority status for next year.

Resident hunters can log on to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Licensing website to obtain information regarding their draw results and priority status. Notifications have also been mailed to applicants advising them as to whether or not they have been awarded a licence for the 2003-2004 big game hunting season. Successful applicants must submit their licence fee of $46 by June 27, 2003 in order to receive their licences and tags before the opening of the big game hunting season. Licence fees must be remitted to the Central Cashiers Office at the Confederation Building.

Hunters who have not received a license notice in the mail can obtain information about the outcome of the draw by calling the Inland Fish and Wildlife Division in Corner Brook or St. Johns, or one of the Forest Resources and Agrifoods regional offices in Gander, Corner Brook or Happy Valley-Goose Bay . The telephone numbers are:

Inland Fish and Wildlife:
Corner Brook (709) 637-2025 Fax (709) 637-2004
St. Johns (709) 729-4203

Forest Resources and Agrifoods:
Gander (709) 256-1460
Corner Brook (709) 637-2409
Happy Valley/Goose Bay (709) 896-2732

Recently, the Science Division conducted a census in Area 23 (Bonavista North) and in Area 64 (Middle Ridge). As a result of these studies the quota in Area 23 has been reduced by 200 licenses and Area 64 has been reduced by 500 licenses.

"Participation rates in hunting in Newfoundland and Labrador remain amongst the highest in the country," said Minister Bettney. "I wish all hunters a safe and enjoyable experience when they go afield this fall."

Hunters are reminded that the deadline for receipt of fall black bear applications for the island is June 27, 2003.
