The new name will be School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador. Gerald Wheeler from Gill Memorial School in Musgrave Harbour was elected president of School Sports. "Our new name and logo represents a much more progressive and inclusive organization. We realize that the key to healthy lifestyles starts long before high school and we are trying to do our part by expanding our mandate into the junior high schools, to offer more opportunities for participation for that age group." Some of the key initiatives identified during the weekend were the introduction of female hockey and floor hockey as new sanctioned and sponsored sports and a new system of control and accountability for all school sports. The school athletic calendar for 2003-2004 was set and provincial tournaments awarded as well. Besides Mr. Wheeler, Dennis Lush was elected to the position of vice president, Administration; Phil Griffiths as vice president, Tournaments/Technical; and, Rosemary Ryan as vice president, Junior High.
