The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

St. John�s regional high school track and field championships scheduled this weekend

Teams in the St. John�s area are gearing up for the upcoming St. John�s Regional Track and Field Championships. One of the largest high school track events, student from schools throughout the St. John�s, Mount Pearl and CBS areas will compete at Pearlgate Track and Field Complex on Wednesday, May14. Teams and individuals are welcome to compete in an attempt to qualify for the Provincial Track and Field Championships scheduled for Stephenville High School on May 31.

Events for both meets include sprints (100m, 200m, 400m), middle/distance events (800m 1,500m, 3,000m - female, 5,000m - male), relays (4 X 100m, 4 X 400m) , jumps (long jump, high jump), throws (discus, shot put, javelin)

High school track and field athletes have had great success in the past. Many times athletes first introduction is through a high school meet. Some of last year�s athletes who have gone on to great success particularly with national legion competitions include Danielle Stacey from Burin Peninsula, Adam Greene from Stephenville and Ron Sweeney from Mount Pearl. These athletes along with many more will be back to defend titles, qualify for provincial meets and more.

The convenor for the St. John�s event is Cathy Carroll at St. Bonaventure�s College. The provincial convenor is Rosemary Ryan at Stephenville High.

All teams involved will be competing for gold, silver team medals and the championship banner. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented in the individual events. As well, the team sportsmanship banner will be awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
