NLIS 6 May 9, 2003 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) Six provincial parks to open for 2003 season Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced six provincial parks will open on Wednesday, May 14, for the 2003 summer camping season. The remaining camping parks will open later in the season. The parks scheduled to open and the number of designated campsites in each are: Barachois Pond (150); Butter Pot (126); Frenchmans Cove (76); La Manche (69); Notre Dame (100); and Lockston Path (55). "As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, we appreciate the beauty of our home province. We enjoy sharing our culture, heritage and pristine nature with those who come to visit us, but we also enjoy being tourists in our own province. I invite everyone to spend some time this summer exploring at least one of this provinces provincial parks," said Minister Bettney. In an effort to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience, the minister encouraged all users to follow park regulations that will be strictly enforced throughout the summer camping season. The minister also noted that changes have been instituted to campsite availability at both La Manche and Notre Dame Provincial Parks. Users of these parks are advised that a number of campsites have been reserved for family groups wishing to spend a quiet and pleasurable weekend enjoying the natural environment, programs and services of the parks. At La Manche, there are 45 campsites reserved for family groups and 65 at Notre Dame. While all campsites are available on a first-come first-served basis, they will be assigned at the discretion of the park staff. There are no changes in park fees for 2003, other than minor adjustments to the seasonal camping fees to reflect the change in the length of the operating season for each park. "I wish all residents and tourists a safe and enjoyable summer camping season," said Minister Bettney. Media contact: Melony ONeill, Communications, (709) 729-0928.
